FAQ
The things people most ask about James Hype.
James Hype is a British DJ and record producer behind the multi-platinum single “Ferrari”. Below are straight answers to the questions asked most often about his music, his shows and his craft.
About James Hype
James Hype is a British DJ and record producer, widely regarded as one of the most technically skilled DJs in dance music. He came up through the UK club circuit, broke through with the 2017 hit “More Than Friends”, and reached a global audience with the multi-platinum single “Ferrari”. He is known for treating DJing as a craft and a sport: fast, precise, trick-driven mixing.
James Hype is from the Wirral, in the north west of England. He built his reputation in UK clubs before becoming an international touring artist.
James Hype got his first set of decks, second-hand vinyl turntables, for his 15th birthday, and by 16 was DJing at friends’ birthday parties. At 18 he handed out his own CDs around Liverpool and talked his way into a Tuesday-night club slot. He then spent years on the UK circuit sharpening the fast, technical mixing style he is known for, before his productions broke through, first with “More Than Friends” in 2017, then “Ferrari” in 2022, which made him a global headline act.
James Hype is engaged to Tita Lau, the London-based DJ and producer of Hong Kong Chinese and English heritage. The two got engaged in August 2023.

DJ Setup
James Hype is known for fast, technical, trick-heavy mixing: rapid cuts, loops and edits that treat DJing like a sport. He often plays across four decks.
James Hype performs on a Pioneer DJ setup: CDJ-3000X players, a DJM-A9 mixer and a DJS-1000 sampler. In the studio he produces in Ableton Live.
James Hype isn’t seen using the sync button. He beatmatches by ear and has done since long before he was headlining — but he has never publicly shamed another DJ for using it. Writing about it in 2016, he pushed back on the idea that sync is “a magical thing that turns you into EZ with one click”, and made the point that with modern equipment and enough hours behind the decks, beatmatching two tracks is the easy part: “the dreaded button really isn’t necessary”. What his videos are meant to show isn’t beatmatching — it’s the creativity, the routines and the ways of playing records he finds more exciting. There’s no hidden secret in them. As he put it: “maybe it’s practice and hard work”.
